Crochet flowers

Introduction

Hello! I hope you're all doing well ♡ For those of you that know me, you'll know that I always have a project (or three) on the go. One of my most recent projects is making a flower mirror. I found a lovely circle mirror second-hand on Facebook Marketplace for £5 and thought it would be perfect. Since then, I've been crocheting all different varieties of flowers to go around the frame of the mirror.

For most of the flowers, I've been using written patterns I've found online or video tutorials on YouTube. However, for some of the flowers, my vision has been so particular that I've found it difficult to find a specific pattern that matches my idea. Sometimes I have found patterns online that I love the look of, but they require the use of a 2/2.5/3mm crochet hook. I think the smallest size I own is 3.5mm and I don't know where that one is, so realistically the smallest size I can use is 4mm. If I tried following the patterns with the hook sizes I've got, I'll end up with huge flowers that aren't in the right proportions to the rest of the mirror's (ie a forget-me-not ending up a similar size to a daffodil). Because of this, I have written some of my own patterns for little flowers, using a 4.5mm hook.

In this blog post, I'll share with you the patterns I've made for the following flowers:
  • Little daisies
  • Forget me nots and cherry blossom
  • Buttercups

Disclaimer

The patterns are written using US terminology. I have used cotton yarn that requires a 4mm hook, but I get painful cramping in my hand when I use my 4mm, so I have switched to using a 4.5mm for these patterns as I find that far more comfortable. The results of using a 4mm hook will probably be very similar, but may end up slightly smaller, so please be aware of that.

Abbreviations

  • sc = single crochet
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st = stitch
  • MR = magic ring
  • inc = increase (two single crochets in one stitch)
  • yo = yarn over.
I have written these patterns myself, so while I don't hold copyright over them, I would love that if you use them if you could give credit for using my work. I would of course also love to see photos of what you make using these patterns and what you use them for!

With that all being said, please enjoy the patterns and let me know if you have any ideas of other flowers I should crochet ♡

Little daisies

In yellow/centre colour:
R1: 8sc in MR (8 sts). Sl st to join, fasten off and weave in ends.

Join white/petal colour in any st of R1:
R2: (ch4, sl st into same st, sl st into next) x8. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Buttercups

In yellow:
R1: [in MR] (ch2, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 1, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 1, yo, pull through 3, sl st into ring) x5. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Forget-me-nots

In blue/petal colour:
R1: [in MR] (ch3, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 2, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 2, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 2, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook, ch3, sl st into ring) x5. Fasten off and weave in ends.

In white/yellow/detail colour:
Pull the darning needle through the middle of the ring towards the front of the flower, pull it between two petals and back through the middle of the ring towards the front. Repeat for the other four petals but on the fifth petal, don't pull through to the front and instead secure at the back and tie the two threads together. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blossoms

There are lots of different petal:centre colour combinations that can be done for blossom flowers. For mine, I have done some with pink petals, a darker pink yarn for detailing and white centre, and for another I have done white petals, pink detailing and dark brown centre. You can do whichever colour combination you feel will work best for your project. The blossom pattern is essentially the same as the forget-me-not pattern, but with one extra step. I have highlighted the parts that are the same in yellow so you can see where the new part comes in.

In petal colour:
R1: [in MR] (ch3, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 2, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 2, yo, pull up a loop, pull through 2, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook, ch3, sl st into ring) x5. Fasten off and weave in ends.

In detail colour:
Pull the darning needle through the middle of the ring towards the front of the flower, pull it between two petals and back through the middle of the ring towards the front. Repeat for the other four petals but on the fifth petal, don't pull through to the front and instead secure at the back and tie the two threads together. Fasten off and weave in ends.

In centre colour:
Pull the darning needle through the middle of the ring towards the front of the flower, make a French knot, wrapping around the needle twice, and then pull through to the back.
